Longtime El Dorado resident Harold Penner, died Thursday, October 31, 2019, at his home with family at his side. He was 94 years of age.
Harold Lee Penner was born on November 27, 1924 in Hillsboro, KS; the son of Jacob F. and Florentine (Janke) Penner. He grew up in Hillsboro and graduated from there in 1942. He was raised by his closest siblings, Ruth and Rose. He went on to attend Tabor College and Kansas State University, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and soils. Harold enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 after the attack of Pearl Harbor. He worked in the Naval Hospital Orthopedics and Allergy Clinics as a Pharmacist Mate (PHM 3-C). He faithfully served our country until 1946. On August 31, 1948, he was united in marriage to Doris Louise Dody, in Marion, KS. Doris preceded him in death in 2016. Doris and Harold moved to Great Falls, MT, where he began his first job with the Soil Conservation Service. After 6 months he was transferred to Choteau, MT for 5 years where Joan was born in 1952. In 1955, the family left Choteau and moved to El Dorado, as the family thought that the winters in Montana were too cold and they wanted to live closer to their families. In March of 1955, Jan was born. Harold retired in 1980, after spending 30 years with the Soil Conservation Service. After retirement, between 1980-2000, Harold was self employed through his lawn care service, “Penn Lawn”. When Harold was not tending to lawns, he enjoyed gardening, stamps, raising tropical salt water fish, reading, bridge, square dancing, Boy Scouting, golf, mowing for the church and museum, and delivered Meals on Wheels. Preceding him in death were his parents, 4 sisters and 2 brothers, and his wife Doris in 2016. Surviving family members include his daughters, Joan Bixler of Topeka and Jan Umhay of Mesa, AZ, 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and his 2 loving caregivers-Joy Williams and Colette Thompkins. Cremation was chosen and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 9 2019 at 11am at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Harold’s name may be directed to the El Dorado Senior Center.
