Tribute

James “Jim” Tiner’s life began on September 9, 1928 in Port Henry, New York. He was the son of Orla Drake and Frances (Smith) Tiner and was baptized in the Methodist Church in 1942. Jim graduated from Toms River High School in New Jersey, class of 1946. While in high school, Jim was an accomplished athlete. He lettered in football, track, baseball and basketball. As a sophomore in high school, Jim was named the New Jersey State long jump champion. Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, brought him on to continue his football career. While attending Southwestern, he met the love of his life, Marjorie Wright. He and Marjorie were united in marriage on August 26, 1951 at the Mulvane United Methodist Church. Jim earned his B.A. from Southwestern in 1952. He faithfully served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged, Jim continued his education at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, while beginning his high school teaching career in Bushton, Kansas. Three years later,  he accepted a chemistry and physics position at El Dorado High School. For 30+ years, when one asked Jim what he taught for a living, he would say "kids mostly." Jim and Marjorie would both teach for nine months out of the year and as soon as the school year ended, they would move to Gunnison, Colorado. Because of his many summers spent in Colorado, friends and former students nicknamed him "Tex" Tiner. Jim was also a member of the Kansas NEA and received Teacher of the Year in 1988. He was a jokester and enjoyed fishing and hunting quail with his good friend, Bucky Fuller. His greatest joy was his family, which includes his children, Carrie Lou (Tiner) Johnson and James Jubal Tiner; grandchildren, Melissa Lou (Johnson) Wilson and her husband, Daren Wilson, Colby Elizabeth Johnson, Edward Chance Johnson, Olivia Helena Tiner and Griffin James Tiner; great grandchildren, Colin Turner Wilson, Nathan Cole Wilson, Seth Ryan Wilson, Carly Ann Wilson, Kiley Elizabeth Johnson and Gage Turner Johnson; and his friend of 26 years and caregiver, Marcella Schmidt.  Jim passed away on September 17, 2022, at his home in El Dorado. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 66 years, Marjorie, son-in-law, Edward Johnson, and brother, Fred Tiner.  His family and friends will gather on Wednesday, September 21st at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home where his service of remembrance will be held at 10 a.m. Jim will be laid to rest in the Newkirk Cemetery in Newkirk, Oklahoma, following his service and luncheon.
