Shirley Sue Gordon of Eureka Kansas passed away Thursday, April 16, 2019 at the Greenwood County Hospital. The daughter of Ralph and Burnice (Burt) Gordon, Shirley was born on November 26, 1931 in Neodesha, KS. Following the illness and death of their parents, Shirley and her two older sisters were reared by their loving uncle Charles H. and Martha Gertrude Quackenbush who insured that the girls were well cared for. A 1949 graduate of Eureka High School, Shirley continued her education at Emporia State University Teacher’s college, where she would later graduate with a degree in library Science. She was a staple in the local community of Eureka where, following her short stint teaching 3rd grade, she worked as a librarian. During her extensive career in education, she was able to serve as librarian to multiple generations of students. She was especially fond of the Bradford Memorial Library. Shirley was an avid historian, cat lover, and took great joy in reading. Surviving relatives include life-long friend Fredda (Greenwood) Blakley, her husband Lee and their children; Trent, Lowell, and Paige. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, loving guardians, and her sisters; Mary Lou and Georgianna. Memorial contributions in Shirley’s name may be directed to the Christian Congregational Church of Eureka, the Bradford Memorial Library of El Dorado, or to the Caring Hands Humane Society of Newton Kansas (A no kill shelter).
